Matty Arnold is a filmmaker, photographer, and teacher. He makes stuff!
Matty Arnold is an accomplished filmmaker with more than 20 years of experience. Coupled with being a writer, director, producer, photographer, and educator. He is best known for The Long Green Line (named one of the top ten sports films of All Time by ESPNrise.com ); The Last Playlist, and Legends of La La.
Matty’s formative years' foreshadowed his current life living in Los Angeles working in the film industry. He wrote an award-winning book, "THE NEW ARNOLD", in 1st grade, and set the tone for his professional creative life.
Matty's documentary filmmaking debut, Long Green Line, is a true story about the legacy of 26-time state champion cross country coach, Joe Newton. The film was voted Top 10 Best Sports Films of All Time by ESPNrise.com. In addition to his documentary work, Arnold has created several fake documentaries, or as he calls them, “creative non-fiction” stories. His first web-series, Legends of LaLa, delves into the world of aspiring singer-songwriters in the Los Angeles music scene. The series features live performances by real artists, and dramatizes the all-too-true stories of these artists’ crazy lives. Arnold wrote and directed a feature film using the same characters. The Last Playlist captures the comeback story of Nick Silver, the ‘legendary’ music producer who, after a 20 year hiatus from the business, finds out he’s going deaf. With this news, ‘The Golden Ear’ sets out to prove he’s still relevant by curating his first and final playlist. Following The Last Playlist, Arnold wrote, shot, and directed another creative non-fiction web series, Imso Zen; a satire about Los Angeles Yoga and Silicon Beach.
As a photographer, Matty has traveled around the world, capturing a range of subjects from musicians in Los Angeles, mountain villagers in Tibet, and practitioners in the Iyengar Yoga scene. His photos capture moments in which people are honing their craft, doing what they love, and making art.
Matty is a gifted educator, flipping the script with students, encouraging them to be producers of content, not just consumers in this digital age. He uses an experiential pedagogical approach to get students invested in their own learning and in the process gain skills in the trade. Many of his technology lessons are available in his YouTube series, It's Not Letting Me. One of Matty’s passions is teaching film and technology. For more than 20 years he has done this at private schools in Chicago and Los Angeles. (Chicago Latin School, Crossroads School, Harvard-Westlake, and the Brentwood School).
Arnold is West Hollywood-based and shares a home with his dog, officially named: "A Girl Named Jack".
He hails from Elmhurst, Illinois. Arnold studied at University of Dayton, art at Loyola University Chicago - John Felice Rome Center, and trained at the Second City Conservatory.
