Legends of La La is series of musical documentary-style tales exploring what it takes to make it in Hollywood, and in the music industry.
I love seeing Singer/Songwriters perform. In 2007, I was spending a lot of time at Crane's' Hollywood Tavern, especially on their Tuesday night songwriter night.
Songwriters wear their hearts on their sleeves, and when they perform, they have a unique ability to describe the saddest song with a good old fashioned joke.
The episodes in Legends of La La came first. We'd shoot a live song, and then make up a fake documentary based on that song.
The live song performance is the soundtrack for each episode.
Actor Alan Berger plays the part of Nick Silver, and he captures the pure narcissism of a typical LA music producer from the 1970s.
Nick Silver wants to become relevant again, so he curates a playlist with one song per artist - rather than one record with twelve songs by one artist.
He is a metaphor for Hollywood ego, and the music industry's inability to adapt to evolving technology once the smartphone became ubiquitous.
